Cemetary Extension
On 11th May, inbetween showers, the sun shone just at the right moment for the Bishop of Ripon
to consecrate the extension to the cemetary in Arkendale. The registrar was present, which is
a legal requirement, and several parishioners.
As is the custom the Bishop prayed in each of the four corners of the new piece of ground, after
which everyone was treated to tea and cakes at the home of Mr and Mrs Houseman.
The land for this project has been very generously donated by a member of the parish, and the legal
costs and the cost involved in putting up a new fence and hedging have been met by generous donations
from the Parish Council, our local councillor Mr John Watson, Harrogate Historic Churches, and the
Big Lottery Fund (Awards for All).
Without all this help the extended graveyard would not have been possible and the villagers of Arkendale
would very soon have been unable to be buried in their own village.
