St Bartholomew's Church
The church stands at the centre of this small attractive village on an important site, being the highest point in the village and the junction of the two village streets. A religious building has stood here since the 14th Century, although the present building dates only from 1836, but interestingly, it was the first church to be consecrated in the then new Diocese of Ripon, in January 1837.

Its prominent location means that visitors to the village see the tower standing out against the sky well before reaching the first houses. On closer approach you will see the church is built of a grey brick and the tower is crowned with large stones and pinnacles.

Church Organ Restoration
The old organ was taken out of St Bartholomew’s Church on Tuesday the 26th July. Apparently it had been constructed from more than one organ and the keyboard surround had come from an old harmonium. It was amazing to see how many tubes and pipes were hidden behind the wooden structure and it was equally amazing how quickly and efficiently the men dismantled it. The result is a good-sized area at the back of Church which will incorporate both the replacement organ and a possible meeting area. More definite plans will be made when the new organ is in place. For the first time for over 50 years the ‘missing’ stained glass window is exposed, previously hidden behind the tall wooden structure, and it is a delight to see it at last!

Minor alteration work will need to be done with regard to electrics, decorating and carpentry, and after the installation of the replacement organ it is hoped to carpet the area. This with the cost of the organ puts a considerable financial burden on those who contribute regularly to the upkeep of the building. It is hoped that many people in the village will enjoy the music from the new instrument and donations, small or large, towards the cost will be greatly appreciated. Please contact the rector, churchwardens or treasurer if you would like to contribute. In the meantime we will keep you informed of progress and we look forward to a greatly-enhanced area at the back of Church in the near future.

The Ark - Arkendale's New Sunday School
We meet every other week during the school term time, at 9.45AM.for an hour. Our meetings begin in the village hall but often end with us joining the congregation for the last ten minutes of the service where we will be blessed. We will go over to church if it is the 1st or 3rd Sunday of the month.
