Women's Institute
Arkendale WI was formed in 1929. We meet on the first Wednesday in the month at the Minskip
Village Hall. Our WI is a member of the Boroughbridge Group, and the North Yorkshire West
Federation of Women’s Institutes.
Arkendale WI presently has just under 30 members. The youngest members were born in 1973, the
oldest in 1914. Many of our ladies work full or part time, many others are involved in childcare,
as mothers or Grandmas, are busy homemakers or voluntary workers. Our members take part in a
wide ranging field of activities, walking, cycling, riding, swimming, yoga, and golf to name a
few. Most of our members live within the parish of Walkingham hill, and represent all of those
villages.
Arkendale WI is famous for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Our main fund raising event is
to support our Group's WI marque at the Boroughbridge show, providing show visitors with refreshments
and a place to relax for a few moments on a busy show day.
Our recent meetings have included a talk entitled 'Life at Ripley Castle in the 21st Century' by Sir
Thomas Ingleby, a slideshow on Wildlife in the Hebridean Islands, a flower arranging demonstration and
an outing to Skipton for a 'Ghost Walk'. Taking part in the many events that the federation offer is
optional. Residential courses and holidays are also on offer.
At every meeting our ladies provide a light supper or biscuits and tea acting as hostesses once a
year by rota.
Why Not Sample One Of Our Meetings?
If you would like to come to a meeting you would be most welcome and under no obligation to come again
(although most of our guests do!) The charge for the evening is £2.
Please contact our President, Vivienne Glover on 01423 340850 who will arrange for you to be welcomed by our new
members officer Gina Gates.
